The next day trip for the Kingwood Photoclub will be Saturday, April 16 to the rookery at the High Island Bird Sanctuary. Â We will meet at Kingwood First Baptist Church at 10 a.m., arriving at the sanctuary about 11:30 a.m. to catch the best light for this location.
The Texas gulf coast is a paradise for bird lovers in the spring. Â Not only is it a major flight path for migratory birds, but waterfowl and shore birds love the marshy regions near the shore. Â One of the best places to view some of the most photogenic birds in the animal kingdom is about an hour from Kingwood, at High Island Bird Sanctuary.
Roseate spoonbills, great egrets, snowy egrets and the less showy cormorants all share an island nesting roost surrounded by water but at places only fifty yards from observation platforms on the banks of the marsh. Â The viewing areas are easily accessible by boardwalks and short trails near the entrance to the park.
Bring water, light clothing, mosquito spray and sun screen. Â Entrance to the rookery is $10
