Members – Did you Know? (13)

Auspicious number 13. in Chinese culture, 13 is a lucky number, which means ‘assured growth’ or ‘definitely vibrant’. So this post is going to be a vibrant one…read on.

Did you know – as a member you have to opportunity to volunteer and help your club reach even higher levels of excellence.

  • Field Trips: if you dream one up you can contact our events coordinator (events@kwphotoclub.com) and suggest it. Even better offer to lead it.
  • Trips: want to help or lead a club trip? Step up. Suggest one and get going.
  • Workshops: you know who learns the most at workshops? If you guest students, you’d be wrong. It’s the teacher. I know from personal experience. Here’s a secret I’ll reveal to only you. Most of my photography “knowledge” accrued from several dozen workshops I prepared where I had only sparse expertise before announcing I’d do them. Nothing focuses the mind like over promising.
  • Club positions: once a year our board members and officers go through the same ritual. Many of us would like to step aside but can’t think of anyone who’s voluntarily stepped forward to express an interest. Our club only works because some members step up. Look at our “who we are” page. Chip in.

We’re getting close to the end of this series of DYK articles. Promise.

Did you know – our club has had a couple of “Special Interest Groups” over the years. We currently have only one group; our Post Processing SIG. This group meets monthly to talk about what you do to your images after (post) you’ve taken them. Some photographers do nothing, we’re not a group for those people. If you do anything from editing, to culling and organizing, to printing, to posting then this group might be for you. We’re not a workshop series to teach post processing but we will dive into all sorts of different software and techniques. We get together to discuss and teach each other. Most meeting are online (Zoom).

The join our PP SIG contact admin@kwphotoclub.com.

If you’d like to see another SIG form bring it up to our president. ((President@kwphotoclub.com). SIG’s can be almost anything photography related. Birding, travel, camera (Canon, Nikon …), studio, etc. We’ll help you try to get your SIG rolling.

The Club needs help for a Santa Shoot

We have a request from Woodspring Forest HOA near Kingwood to photograph their Meet Santa Event on Sunday, Dec 1 from 1:30 pm to 5 pm. This is a local event that we photographed last year and are invited back again this year. The club enjoys helping our community by participating in these seasonal events. It would be very sad if we couldn’t find a few members to help.

What we need is a photographer or two and a few members to help set up, direct the children and families, and take down. We had a blast last year but unfortunately several of us are not in town for this event and we could use your talents to make this a memory for some young families.

For the photographers, we need you to bring your camera, tripod, extra camera batteries, and strobes or flash attachments. The club has a backdrop and Emily Murphy has a stand. For helpers, no additional equipment is needed but bring your camera if you want to get some candid photos. We’ll have a Dropbox for you to upload the photos. If you are not comfortable with post-processing that can be done after you upload your raw files. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer please contact me at:

President@kwphotoclub.com or talk to me at Tuesday’s meeting.

Be a Santa Elf for a few hours and share the joy of the season!

Eleventh DYK .. if you’re a member and this isn’t getting you super excited, I can’t imagine what would! I’m thinking of making a full length movie out of these.

Did you know– as a member you are able to share some of your pictures each month with the other members. Every month our illustrious club president picks a theme and you’re invited to upload three images to be shown at the monthly meeting. The session is called share and LEARN. When your time comes to share you can say whatever you want about your images especially if it includes information others might find illuminating. Keep it “G” rated.

To upload your share and learn images use either the link on the Monday morning email or sign into the website where you should see a link on the welcome page.

Now I know that you don’t know this one. I’ve been managing our website for about ten years and I’ve only seen this done a couple of times. What is this mysterious member benefit that so few are taking advantage of?

Did you know – As a member, if you sign in, you can comment on posts! Yes, that feature exists and would allow you to stand out among this membership group by being one of the very few who have tried this… and who doesn’t want to stand out!

To comment on a post you first have to “isolate” the post on its own page. If the post is in the News section, for example, you can click on the post title and it will appear on its own page. Scroll to the page bottom and you’ll see a box to comment. Say something nice. Remember the sage words of the baby goose, “What would mother say?”

Posts you click on from the list of recent posts on the front page also appear isolated on their own page.

.Looking forward to see if we have any takers.
