August 15th Share and Learn “Trips – Here and There”

Two weeks to go before our next meeting and while chilling in your homes why not review your catalogs for your favorite travel photos? With heat advisories, this would be a win-win for you and the club.

The photo insert is from our 2019 trip to Russia. This is the famous Church of the Transfiguration which dates back to 1764. There is a legend that the church was built by Master Nestor using only his ax and wood. The 22 wooden cupolas that adorn this multi-story church, were all constructed by hand. And, the entire church was built using only wooden pegs to hold it together. It was a wonder to see. Weather events on our trip caused a delay in our arrival to late afternoon which gave us the best light to photograph this architectural gem. A bonus for me :). A travel photo with a story what stories do your photos tell?

Photos need to be uploaded by 2 pm on August 15th. I will be adding the photos to the Powerpoint agenda. Upload to our Dropbox using the Share and Learn button found to the right on our club e-mails.

Please resize your photos for uploading to our Gallery and header. As the number of Share and Learns has decreased I’ve decided to upload a photo from each member to the website header. I hope you have enjoyed seeing your photos there.

The in-person meeting is at our normal location, the Kingwood First Baptist Church; 3500 Woodland Hills Drive, Kingwood. Zoom links will be sent via e-mail before the meeting.

The meeting will start at 6:30 pm with the speaker’s presentation at the beginning. Connie Emerson has arranged another great speaker and topic.

August 15th, 6:30 pm, in-person or via Zoom, hope to see you there and come join us at an after-the-meeting social gathering at Big City Wings! Cheers 🙂

Tomorrow Night! – June 20 Program: “Exploring the Artist Within” with David Downs

David will discuss his approach to seeing the scene and looking beyond the initial capture as he is setting the exposure, capturing the moment, etc.  Yes, it’s a beautiful moment or maybe it isn’t but he can see the potential in in the object or the view or the moment by understanding what is possible using the tools we have available to us today.  We will take a look at original captures followed by end results and talk through why he captured the image and what led to his end result.

June 20 Program: David Downs presents “Exploring the Artist Within”

David Downs, our speaker, will discuss his approach to seeing the scene and looking beyond the initial capture as he is setting the exposure, capturing the moment, etc.  Yes, it’s a beautiful moment or maybe it isn’t but he can see the potential in in the object or the view or the moment by understanding what is possible using the tools we have available to us today.  We will take a look at original captures followed by end results and talk through why he captured the image and what led to his end result.

David Downs has carried a passion for photography for as long as he can remember.  There weren’t always the resources to have a camera nor to purchase and process the film that went in them.  Yes, he’s that old. Over time he did manage to get a camera or two and although the stated purpose was to capture images of his rambunctious sons, he still managed to sneak a few creative images onto each roll.

Today, in addition to running a successful Financial Planning practice in Plano, David runs two photography businesses.  David Downs Photography (www.daviddowns.com) is his platform for producing award winning commercial work, branding campaigns, portraiture and the creative art that motivates his time behind the camera.  He’s received the Artist of The Year Award for the Art Centre of Plano and has had images on multiple magazines covers.  He has multiple images selected for the PPA Imaging Excellence category in 2023 and received a Silver Medal from the TPPA in 2023.  Benton Downs Photography (www.bentondowns.com) allows David, in collaboration with his business partner Barry Benton, to share his passion and love of photography with others.  From classes such as Introduction to Photography, editing classes, creative photography classes and workshops in many locations, Benton Downs works to give every participant the instruction they need, regardless of their expertise.  Find images at #pixeldave or on FB at David Downs Photography.

May Meeting Agenda and Gallery

We had an excellent turnout for our May meeting. For the monthly topics I’ve attached the Agenda for you to preview. Our speaker, Jim Nix, provided us with some great tips regarding travel photography. You can find more about Jim on YouTube: Jim Nix’s YouTube Channel. Lots of photography tutorials, tips, tricks, and reviews. He photographs to please himself but has had photos displayed in magazines and sold. The club had another fantastic program.

Chris Summers reviewed our membership and we are very close to last year’s numbers. We had two family memberships join this month: Dawn Abram & Carlie Sawyer, and Jim & Elena Gonzales. Welcome to our club!

John Gray mentioned that he is almost out of hats so if you desire one of our club hats order sooner than later so you are not disappointed. In the future, the club will exit merchandise so these will be limited edition hats!

Annular Solar Eclipse is coming Oct 14 and Mike and I will be hosting a workshop on Sept 2. Registration will be opening in August for an afternoon at the Kingwood Public Library. This is the first of two solar eclipse events coming to Texas. The second one will be on April 8, 2024, and will be a total eclipse. Both eclipses can be seen in the Hill Country, if you are interested in viewing and photographing these events get a room reservation now.

Randi and Jim are keeping our club activities calendar full. We are coming to the hot summer when we take a break from outdoor photo events. Check out the list of events in the agenda and posted on our website and on Facebook.

Pam Walton wanted to remind members to add their recommendations to the “KWPC Travel Spreadsheet”. The link is also on the Monday e-blast. This is a trip-planning resource with guides and Photo Tour recommendations. You will find recommendations for the USA and outside the USA. Download the PDF and please add any recommendations you have.

For all those members that have the desire to share their work, Steve Hansen and Tim Sullivan have found a location, Cove Craft Beer and Wine, that will allow us to hang a few of our photos. The agenda has all the particulars. In the beginning, the owner was looking for Texas themes but at the meeting, Steve said he was open to any photos. We are getting good feedback so think about showing off some of your prized photos.

The June 20th meeting will feature speaker David Downs on “Exploring the Artist Within” and our Share and Learn is “Foods We Love”, more on both in another post.

The last two slides give you the schedules for both upcoming programs and our Share and Learn topics.

Finally, I’d like to thank Ron and Cathy Fovargue and Jim and Elena Gonzales for volunteering to be our Christmas Social Committee. This is our one big social of the year (no program) for members and I’m very pleased that they volunteered! Thank you both and welcome to the club Jim and Elena Gonzales!

Check out the agenda and the May Gallery “Wildlife in your Neighborhood” is also uploaded. Enjoy and hope you make the meeting next month. Kathy Muhle
